    An Evening of Food and Fotos Will Take Place at the Paley Center for Media in Los Angeles,

    April 7, 2011 on the 17th anniversary of the Genocide in Rwanda

    Los Angeles, CA (March 1, 2011) – Foundation Rwanda and La Brea Bakery are proud to present Foundation Rwanda: An Evening of Food & Fotos LA, an evening of award-winning photography combined with fine cuisine from some of Los Angeles’s top chefs to support women and children affected by the 1994 genocide. The first annual LA Food & Fotos event will take place at The Paley Center for Media on April 7th, 2011 at 6:00 pm.

    The evening will feature signature dishes from top chefs including Suzanne Goin (AOC, Lucques, Tavern, Hungry Cat), Dahlia Narvaez (Pizzeria Mozza) and Suzanne Tracht (Jar) in addition to other leading chefs and mixologists. Foundation Rwanda: An Evening of Food and Fotos LA, is also sponsored by 901 Silver Tequila, and will feature photographic art including the Intended Consequences Exhibit of portraits and testimonies from Rwanda by Newsweek photojournalist Jonathan Torgovnik. The exhibition, underwritten by CBS, will be on view at The Paley Center for Media gallery March 2 – May 1, 2011.

    “Foundation Rwanda’s innovative use of new media and photography informs us about the consequences of sexual violence and genocide and inspires us to take action. The children that Foundation Rwanda supports may represent Rwanda’s dark past, but they also represent the light and hope for a better future through education,” said Nancy Tellem, Sr. Advisor to the CEO, CBS Corporation.

    Founded by Torgovnik and Jules Shell, Foundation Rwanda was established to improve the lives of children born as a result of sexual violence during the Rwandan genocide by providing funding for their education; linking their mothers to income generating activities and psychological and medical support services; and raising awareness about the consequences of genocide and sexual violence through photography and new media.

    The event will also include an auction of high-end culinary items and entertainment and sports experiences. All proceeds raised from the evening will benefit Foundation Rwanda to help sponsor education for 1500 children in Rwanda.     About Foundation Rwanda – Foundation Rwanda is the brainchild of photojournalist Jonathan Torgovnik and Jules Shell. In February 2006, Torgovnik traveled to East Africa on behalf of Newsweek magazine to work on a story about the 25th anniversary of HIV/AIDS. While there, he met Margret, a Rwandan survivor who was brutally raped during the genocide, became pregnant, and contracted HIV/AIDS. This horrific story led Torgovnik to embark on a personal photography project to document and tell the stories of 40 women like Margret. He learned an estimated 20,000 children were born from rape during the genocide and repeatedly heard the mothers’ plea for a better future for their children through education. Deeply affected by the ongoing consequences of the genocide and the challenges that these women and children face daily, Torgovnik joined with Shell to create Foundation Rwanda.     About Foundation Rwanda: An Evening of Food & Fotos – When our friends, Chef Gabe Thompson and Pastry Chef Katherine Thompson, (dell’anima L’Artusi and Anfora) heard about Foundation Rwanda’s efforts they rolled up their sleeves and offered to help the best way they knew how– by cooking for a good cause. Foundation Rwanda: An Evening of Food & Fotos is their idea and is an annual benefit rallying local chefs in key cities to raise awareness and support for women survivors of the 1994 genocide. It originally launched in New York City at Bonham’s NY Gallery in May, 2010 with tasting tables from 30 NYC chefs & restaurants including Gabe Thompson/L’Artusi & dell’anima, Anita Lo/Annisa, Mike Price/Market Table, Cedric Vongerichten/Perry Street.
