Rolex Celebrated 40th Anniversary of the Rolex Awards for Enterprise and the Announcement of the Laureates and Young Laureates of 2016

November 15 gala featured Academy Award® winning director James Cameron as host, cocktail reception, awards presentation and private dinner from Wolfgang Puck

What: The Rolex Awards for Enterprise unveiled its 2016 Laureates and Young Laureates at a special evening awards presentation in Los Angeles. These ten exceptional individuals, drawn from all over the world, were chosen for their innovative projects across science, technology, the environment, exploration and cultural heritage. The Rolex Awards were created to foster a spirit of enterprise and advance human knowledge and well-being around the globe. Established in 1976, on the 50th Anniversary of the legendary Rolex Oyster, the Awards celebrate men and women making the world a better place.

The Rolex Awards are an international philanthropic program that supports new and ongoing projects by individuals taking on major challenges to benefit mankind, and it has served as a benchmark for corporate philanthropy around the world over for four decades. The five Senior Laureates honored include: Sonam Wangchuk (polar scientist creating artificial glaciers in the Himalayan region to store water for periods of drought); Andrew Bastawrous (eye specialist who developed a smartphone-based portable eye examination system); Conor Walsh (robotic suit designer); Kerstin Forsberg (biologist protecting giant mantra rays) and Vreni Häussermann (explorer of Patagonian fjords). The star-studded gala commenced with a cocktail reception, followed by a short awards presentation, and ended with a private dinner exquisitely prepared by Wolfgang Puck.

The grants given by Rolex to the global network of visionaries has had a catalytic impact and, in many cases, transformed lives and communities, as well as encouraged new ways of responding to common challenges.
